I have tried all three, with little or no difference at various times and have had many interesting theories put to me as well as many discussions about this very topic. So out for interest, I was wondering how you feel about this, and how much, if any on your forums, guests are allowed to view.

My forum is completely open, apart from Administration discussion on site matters, and a private forum for registered members to discuss certain issues outside of the public domain if they wish too.

So what is your opinion on this matter. :?:

I wouldn't recommend that. Its great for spam bots and trolls who just want to post using proxies on your forum and harrass your members. But if its a must for you. Than go ahead.

Personally, I greatly prefer an open forum over a closed forum.

Jupiter Knight is right about trolls, bots, and spammers, but as long as the forum is moderated daily, spammers won't last long before they're taken out back.

Advantages of an open board is that you get more attention from google and you draw more members. Sometimes people just don't want to apply to a forum without knowing what's inside.

Thank you for your feedback Chrisw,

I have opened and closed my forum so many times that the hinges are squeaking and starting to fall off the doors!

Looks like I had better open it again, can't have the google bots being starved. :!:
