Hi,
I've had to edit some old posts lately on my forum (I've had troubles with a picture host and had to fix some picture links), and a very annoying error keeps popping up every so often, and I'm wondering what this is and how to either solve or avoid it.
I can get the error several times on one post, before it suddenly goes through, or it simply won't go through at all. It most often happens on posts with a lot of text and picures, but i've had it happen on shorter posts too. It happens more often on edits to older posts.
I'd be very grateful for an explanation or a fix.
The error looks something like this (on a white page with the heading in red and the writing in grey), but I've had a few text variations:

General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ]

MySQL server has gone away [2006]

Here: http://moonlightdragon.freeforums.org/index.php
I'm pretty sure it's not browser-related, because it's happened on two different (Firefox and IE). Most of the time it's related to posting or editing a post, but it also happens when trying to preview a post. The last time I got the message, I was trying to preview something, and it kept giving an error about smilies.

---
By the way, I've also had an (unrelated) issue where verification mails are either slow in going out (takes maybe up to 48 hours, and I know because people keep sending me messages about it) or don't go out at all to some people. Seems to happen to several different mail hosts, so unless there's a very common user fault (or newbie mistake) going around, I'm at a loss for why it's happening. It's been going on for a few years now, ever since I switched from admin verification to E-mail verification.

Would you mind if we did a test migration to the new platform (the platform freeforums support is currently on) so that you can test there and see if the issues still occur? A test migration will not affect your current forum in any way.

As long as the forum stays the same visually, I wouldn't mind.
I've only seen the problem with the error message the past half year or thereabout, so it could very well be a platform issue.

I can request a migration on Monday,. just keep in mind, this will only be a test migration for you to test the board on the new platform, you will still be posting on the old platform as usual.

That's fine :)
Will it last for a little while? I live in Europe, and have work on Monday, so I won't be able to test it until I get home.

No worries, I am to blame here, I was late submitting the request. I think you'll see it by morning. I'll post your test URL here once it is ready.

Thanks :)
So far it looks like the problem is with the old platform, because one post I've tried to edit at least 20 times on the old, getting an error every single time, worked fine on the test page. I'll do some more testing tomorrow.

That's great news. And yeah, the old bugs should be no more on the new platform.
