Should Members Be Able To Edit/Delete Their Posts?
Hey.. I have a xbox forum & im not sure weither i should allow my members to be able to edit and/or delete their posts. What have you got set on your forum? Whats your thought on allowing editing & deleting posts by members?

Re: Should Members Be Able To Edit/Delete Their Posts?
Hello SeanFace101, I'll move this to the Off Topic section as its more of a general question rather than a support one. I say let them edit, but don't let them delete. In fact, never delete posts. If a topic/post needs moving, move it to a 'trash bin' forum. I know you are on Advanced Hosting, so the are modifications that will make this easier, such as 'Prime Trash Bin'. With this mod you can allow your moderators to delete posts/topics (as that's easier than moving things or splitting topics etc. etc.) but they are not permenantly deleted, they are moved to a selected trash bin forum and those with the correct permissions can either permenantly delete or undelete the posts/topics and they are simply put back where they were - you can even choose to have a shadow post put in place where the others were deleted. ( http://www.absoluteanime.com/forum/mods ... %20Bin.zip) So, in a nutshell - let them edit, but don't let anybody permenantly delete, don't even do it yourself

Re: Should Members Be Able To Edit/Delete Their Posts?
Currently i have it so my members cant edit or delete their posts. I have 2 groups on my forum "XLF Reviewers" & "Forum Welcomers". These members help out on the forum & they can edit & delete their posts. But im thinking about making it so no one can delete posts, but everything can edit them upto to 30 minutes after posting then no more. As well as members being able to post allowed content, then go back a while later and change it to spam content.. I dont like the idea of a member posting a thread, then after getting replies to it, change it to say differant text to make it look as if the members replied on that instead of the thread which was there before the edit. I also saw on a thread somewhere that its bad for your SEO if members can delete their posts. Thanks for tha link @ Subliminal

i allow them to (in case they make a spelling mistake or decide to post something but then regret it cause maybe they were drunk at the time, or were angry about something and not thinking), but give them a time limit to do it in, to prevent someone getting angry and deciding to delete all their posts or edit them to say something else.

Re: Should Members Be Able To Edit/Delete Their Posts?
A forum without edit features is what I hate the most. I just remembered when I posted something in one of my favorite forum and suddenly I hit the "submit" and I was like and in just a minute, one of the member replied concerning on what I said. Good thing, there's an edit now.. _________________ http://www.themodernman.com/

Re: Should Members Be Able To Edit/Delete Their Posts?
A feature I use is called "Prime Post Revisions". Every time somebody edits their post an "archive" is kept that you can view (permission based, so you can set it so admins and/or mods can only see it). This way you can allow members to edit whenever, so if there's a post a year old they edit you'll still see the old revision of it. http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/p ... revisions/It's only released for phpbb 3.0.8 but works fine on 3.0.10

Let them edit within a time frame of 20 minutes unless they're quoted. Would be difficult to do, but I have faith in you.

It's always good to have an edit function.
P.S Can an admin track edit histories on posts?

edit? yes always but deleting only with admin request. I have that kind of solution on my board and it works great.

Re: Should Members Be Able To Edit/Delete Their Posts?
@dumrine If I"m not mistaken, you can tack how many times its been edited. @Subliminal Is the prime post revision only for advanced hosting ? @SeanFace101 I would allow everyone to edit, but no one (not even moderators) to delete. If they need to get rid of a post they can stick it in a trash bin. The reason I don't let moderators delete is that there are no backups available on ff. So if someone like a moderator was to have a bad hair day then well, you might log in to not having any posts left on your board. But on some types of forums you may want this option available for your members. Just depends on what you want and what is right for your forum. Well, thats my 3 cents on the matter.
